Indian squad selected for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and England series

Today, the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced Indian Men’s Cricket Team squad selections for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and ODI series against England. The squad does not look simple and straight with more surprises in selection. Both the captain and the chief selector held a press conference, which also included the team selection and addressed the selection and exclusion of players.

The chief selector and captain answered the questions of media reporters after the team announcement. Rohit Sharma also explained why the senior players including him are unable to play in the Indian domestic matches reasoning the restless international schedule in all three formats for the last 5-6 years. With the ongoing recovery and fitness of Bumrah, Kuldeep and Shami, the selected squad may have challenges in between the ICC event.

Pacers in Indian Squad

The inclusion of Arshdeep Singh was expected because of his effective performance in T20 against South Africa Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa. The exclusion of Mohammed Siraj was likely because of his less impressive performance and the impact needed as an opening bowler in the ODI format. Today captain Rohit Sharma and chairman of the selection committee of BCCI Ajit Agarkar clarified why they promoted Arshdeep Singh into the ODI format and what made Siraj miss the Champions trophy selection.

Rohit Sharma has clarified that he is looking for a bowler who can take an early breakthrough. Unfortunately, Mohammed Siraj has not succeeded in the BGT series against Australia as well as the ODI format. While Arshdeep is consistent in taking early breakthroughs, which is crucial in the ODI format.

The selection of Jasprit Bumrah for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy was in doubt, BCCI has announced that he will be in the squad for both the 3 ODIs series against England and may miss a few matches against England, and Harshit Rana will be his backup and will play when Bumrah miss out. BCCI is taking recommendations and fitness updates from NCA and the BCCI’s medical department. The selected Indian squad also includes the ICC ODI World Cup hero Mohammed Shami for both the home series against England and the Champions trophy. Interestingly Mohammed Shami has been playing the domestic matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal and looks fit.

Selected Wicket-Keepers in the team

The wicket-keeper selection was also rumoured in the media as a tough decision among 3 wicket-keepers. KL Rahul is selected as the first-choice wicket-keeper to be in playing-11. While Rishabh Pant is selected over Sanju Samson as the backup Wicket-Keeper. However, the decision of Sanju Samson’s selection is considered a disciplinary action as the Kerala cricket board has not played him for the domestic season. The debate on Sanju Samson’s selection also clarifies the BCCI’s intention to play with Sanju Samson in the T20 format as he is selected as opener and Wicket-Keeper in the T20I team for the series against England. While Rishabh Pant missed out on the T20 series against England.

Batsman in the squad

Shubman Gill is selected as the opener with Rohit Sharma as the first choice and made Vice Captain of this Indian Team in the ODI format. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also included in the 15-member squad as a backup opener. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, the number 3 and 4 batsmen of India playing-11 in the champions trophy. This follows KL Rahul at number 5 and Hardik Pandya at Number 6, which looks like a solid batting lineup. The chief selector has also answered a question on Karun Nair for his effective domestic performance, he said that Karun Nair is also unfortunate to miss out because of no scope to replace selected players.

Spinners in the Indian Squad

The selection of Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar as four spinners is considered a spin-heavy team considering all of India’s matches in Dubai. It is intended with the current team selection that either Axar or Jadeja will play at number 7 in the playing 11. Based on the situation either looking at the opposition’s team, (right or left-handed batsman) the selection of Kuldeep or Washington Sundar is expected in the playing 11. If the condition suits a pace bowling attack then all three Indian pacers, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah will play in the playing 11.
